Checking out conditions for the Cherry and Top Gauley (June 28)Nancy and I went for a drive this afternoon to check out Panther Creek Road down to the Top Gauley and the conditions along the Cherry from Fenwick downstream and the road down the Top Gauley. Panther Creek wiped out a big piece of the road about 1/4 mile from Route 39. We turned around and drove to Fenwick and then down the Cherry. The banks of the Cherry were scoured. We could not see much of the river until we got to the Holcomb bridge. The river didn't look like it changed much from what we could see looking upstream and downstream from the bridge. The DOH is piling huge rocks on the spur road at Rhododendron Park, There are a lot of trees between the park and the river, totally blocking the path that we used to take to/from the river. We didn't see any major blockages or changes in the river below the Holcomb bridge all the way to the Gauley - confirming what "Bear" told us after he paddled that section a couple days ago. It looks like the parking area under the "new" bridge is smaller than it was before the flooding. We also saw where the water had been up on the deck of the old bridge and left a bunch of debris. We drove down the gravel road along the left side of the Gauley to see if we could get to Panther Creek. It's about 4.5 miles. We turned around after 2 miles because we got to a section with huge potholes. Terry's wife did drive down there a few days ago but we didn't want to chance it with our Subaru Forester. |
