We discovered whitewater boating relatively late in life (our mid-40s) but that hasn't stopped us from really enjoying the sport. It all began when our sons were in Boy Scouts and they were looking for something fun to do. We got the scouts into canoes on the Cape Fear and Haw rivers near Raleigh, NC. One summer the troop went to Camp Daniel Boone near Canton, NC where they had a kayaing program. Our youngest son, Daniel, fell in love with kayaking and, since he was too young to drive, we had to take up the sport :-). That was in the 1986 timeframe. We retired a couple years ago so we would have more time for paddling.
We have been active members of the Carolina Canoe Club and the West Virginia Wildwater Association for several years. Our favorite rivers are the Cherry, Cranberry, New and Middle Gauley (all within an hour of our house). We also enjoy paddling the Dry Fork of the Cheat, Lower Youghiogheny and Pound/Russell Fork as well as many other class II/III/IV rivers and creeks.
